About 2,000 to 3,000 patients a year a diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos. Known for its heat- and fire-resistant properties, asbestos was widely used throughout the United States in everything from cars to clothes. Beginning in the early 1900s through the early 1970s, asbestos was used with little regard for its dangers, although many researchers knew it caused severe medical problems. Unbroken, asbestos is not dangerous. But when products containing asbestos are broken or damaged, the fine and lightweight fibers are released into the air. Once breathed in, the fibers get trapped and form different types of mesothelioma – pleural, peritoneal or pericardial – depending on there they migrate.

The most common way that mesothelioma victims have been exposed to the disease is through their occupations. For decades, it was mined in open pits and workers used their bare hands to sift through the fibers to separate them for other uses. From the asbestos factories, pounds of the fibers were transported to shipyards and construction sites where workers mixed it with other materials, like concrete and steel. At the same time, the U.S. military, especially the Navy, used asbestos in almost every aspect throughout World War II and the Korean War.

The worst part is that the companies and the military knew about the dangers of asbestos but never told anyone. It was kept quiet.

If you were exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you have rights. You did not cause your disease and have the right to funds to pay for your medical treatments, living expenses and securing your family’s future.
